Andy’s approach to enhancing Physical Education and Sports at SWECET

In a recent discussion with Andy Dobson, Director of PE and Sports at SWECET, we uncovered the approaches that define physical education and sports across our schools.

Andy shared valuable insights into our holistic commitment to PE, including our innovative programmes, community collaborations, and integration with the broader curriculum.

Read on to hear what Andy said…

Holistic Approach to Physical Education

“At SWECET, we are embracing a comprehensive approach to teaching PE, which is gradually being implemented in each of our schools. So far, William Edwards School and Orsett Heath Academy are benefitting from the new approach. We aim to create lessons that engage the head, heart, and hand – focusing on understanding, empathy, and practical skills.

First, we prioritise the intellectual aspect (the head). It’s not just about moving and playing; it is about understanding the principles behind each activity. We empower our students to make informed decisions and develop a deeper appreciation for the sports they engage in.

The practical aspect (the hand) of physical education has been a standard teaching methodology for decades. Through hands-on experience and active taking part, students learn by doing.

But the third and perhaps most vital element of our holistic approach is the heart. Physical education is not just about individual performance; it is about teamwork, communication, resilience, and empathy.

Throughout this holistic approach, we deliver different themes over three lessons every half term, rather than teaching six weeks of one sport. Our ethos is about providing students with opportunities to be active for the rest of their lives, showing them different ways that they can move and building their skills as a whole. We aim to nurture our students as whole individuals, integrating social, emotional, and cognitive growth into our lessons. We prepare students not just for success in sports, but for success in all aspects of life.”

Exceptional PE Programmes

“I also support schools across the Trust with a variety of unique programmes to enhance PE, sports, and physical literacy. SWECET’s notable initiatives include “Learning Through Sport” and the “Sport Leader” scheme, as well as collaborations with Nike Fitness Club and Sweaty Betty Foundation to empower girls’ participation in sports.

Our Learning Through Sport programme has been designed to inspire and uplift pupils who find literacy challenging. It is centred around topical sporting events, such as the recent FA Cup and Wimbledon Championships. The unique scheme, currently running at William Edwards School, Orsett Heath Academy and other schools across Thurrock delivers literacy lessons through these iconic national sporting events.

By integrating literacy lessons with these spectacles, we’re providing an engaging and incredibly valuable platform for learning that resonates with pupils. Mapped against the English curriculum, the programme has been proven to boost our pupils’ grades whilst improving their confidence. To commemorate their achievements, we host a graduation ceremony at the end of each cohort, inviting parents to celebrate alongside their children. This initiative not only aligns with each pupil’s individual learning needs but also encourages a stronger sense of belonging, empowering every child to thrive academically and beyond.

The recognized Sport Leader UK course offers students the chance to achieve a Level 1 Sports Leader Qualification. Each year, pupils enrolled on this programme have the opportunity to support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) at the Olympic Pool in Stratford. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience and encourages Year 9 students to develop their leadership skills.

Recognising the challenges faced by Year 9, 10, and 11 girls engaging in physical activities, we have initiatives in place that address all barriers. We’ve hosted various events, such as sessions focusing on body image, menstrual health, and the importance of proper sports attire like sports bras. These sessions are typically hosted at local leisure centres and offer a diverse range of activities including Pound workshops, Zumba, yoga, and access to fitness suites, providing girls with alternative avenues to traditional sports like netball and football.

Partnerships include collaborations with local Nike stores and the Sweaty Betty Foundation. Supported by SWECET’s funding, these have paved the way for connections with Nike Fitness Club, an exciting initiative that will see a member of its team joining our sessions each week. Here, girls will be offered prizes and incentives that instil a sense of belonging and empowerment so that they can enjoy physical activity in their lives.

Our commitment to holistic education extends beyond the confines of traditional physical education. By strengthening our community outreach, addressing barriers, and integrating physical activity into every aspect of school life, we’re empowering students to lead healthy, active lives. Our efforts to link PE with the broader curriculum and our values help us to create well-rounded individuals who are poised for success!”
